Quick Start

The first thing you should do is to play around with the sample hunting area until you're comfortable with how BuckStalker's screens work.  When you're ready to set up your own hunting area, here's what you should do:

1. Click the 'Hunting Area' menu choice, and then pick 'New...' from the menu that drops down.

2. Pick how you want to define the hunting area.  If you've already got an aerial photo or scanned map image, you can use those, or you can use the free topographic map and satellite images provided by the USGS.  If you're not a picture person, you don't have to use either one.  After you've picked your choice, click the 'Next' button to go to the next step.

3. Depending on what you picked in Step 2, you'll see one of the following screens:

a. GPS coordinates - enter the latitude and longitude for a spot roughly in the middle of your hunting area, or type in the nearest city and state to start browsing for your hunting spot.

b. Pick your satellite and topographic view files.  If you've got your own pictures you want to use, click the 'Pick File' button next to each image type (satellite or topographic map), and find the file on your computer.

c. No map image.  If you don't want to use any kind of map picture, you'll still need to pick a nearby city and state.  BuckStalker needs this to help calculate the time for sunrise and sunset for the pictures you'll be importing from your game cameras.

4. Type a name for your new hunting area, then click 'Done'.  That's it!  You should be taken back to the main screen, and you should be seeing your new hunting area in the main window.

5. Add at least one camera location to your map by clicking the Add Camera button from the toolbar to the right of your map, then clicking the spot on your map where you want to mark the camera.  Now you can start importing pictures from that location.

Getting Pictures From a Camera

This couldn't be easier.  Here it is, step-by-step:

1. Put the memory card from your game camera into your PC's card reader.  Depending on how you've got Windows set up, you might get a message popping up asking you what you want to do - just close the message by clicking the 'X' in the upper right corner.

2. Start BuckStalker and pick the hunting area you pulled the memory card from.

3. Click the 'Get Pics' button in the toolbar.  You'll get a message telling you how many new pictures are on the card, and asking you if you want to import them now.  Go ahead and click 'Import'.

4. A screen will come up showing you the first new picture from your memory card.  Pick which camera you pulled the card from (BuckStalker automatically remembers this camera for later pictures, but you can change it if you need to).

5. If the picture has deer in it, go ahead and 'Tag' them by clicking the right button (Buck, Doe, Unknown, or Fawn).

6. If you want to be able to look at the picture later, click the 'Keep' button.  If you don't need to see the picture again, but you want to keep the record of the tags you input, click 'Discard'.

7. That's it!  You'll see the next un-tagged picture, and you just repeat the process.  When you've tagged the last picture, BuckStalker will tell you so, or you can click the 'Exit' button any time you want and come back later to finish tagging the new pics.  You can take the memory card out of your PC any time after the importing screen goes away.

Finding Your Pictures Again

There are two easy ways to look at your old pics.  The first is to double-click on one of the camera icons in your hunting area.  When you do, a screen will appear that shows you all of the pics that were taken at that location in date order.

If you want to get a little fancier, click the 'Find Pics' button on the main screen.  You'll see a Photo Finder window that has options at the top you can set to filter your pics.  You can limit the pics to a single camera location or all cameras.  You can check boxes to include pics with certain deer types.  You can even specify a date range you want to include.

Whatever your choice, when you've got the filters set the way you want, click 'Search' and BuckStalker will return thumbnail images of all the matching pictures.  Double-click any of the thumbnails to see a larger version of the picture.
